​A TRIBUTE TO REVEREND DR. HERBERT H. LUSK, II
Faithful Shepherd, Servant Leader, and Catalyst for Transformation
​We honor the life and legacy of Reverend Dr. Herbert H. Lusk, II — a man of unwavering faith, tireless service, and boundless compassion. As Pastor of Greater Exodus Baptist Church and former Philadelphia Eagles player and chaplain, Pastor Lusk used every platform to empower others and embody the heart of Christ.
His connection to Chester, PA came full circle when, decades after attending Eagles training camp at Widener University, he returned to champion Frederick Douglass Christian School. In 2014, when the school faced closure, Pastor Lusk stepped in. Until his passing in 2022, he worked in faith to keep its doors open, ensuring children in one of Pennsylvania’s poorest cities had access to strong academics, safety, and hope. To him, education was a sacred mission — a path to lasting change.
​Dr. Lusk believed that transformation began with opportunity. In 1989, he founded People For People, Inc., a nonprofit dedicated to strengthening families through education, job training, and social services. His impact reached beyond Philadelphia — extending to communities across the African continent, always focused on investing in the next generation.
Known as “The Praying Tailback,” he served others not out of duty, but from a deep calling. Whether preaching, advising, mentoring, or building programs to lift families, he offered people the tools to live fuller, more self-sufficient lives.
Though he is no longer with us, his legacy echoes in the students, families, and communities he touched. Reverend Dr. Herbert H. Lusk, II ran his race with purpose — and we are all forever better for it.
